The extended piece "A Tone Parallel to Harlem" (also known as "The Harlem Suite" or just "Harlem") has often been singled out as one of Ellington's great conjunngrinradthunderfire.infoinfo: Jazz. Reply

Ellington himself first recorded it on 7 December (as "A Tone Parallel to Harlem (Harlem Suite)" for his Ellington Uptown album), and it had been given its live premiere on 21 January in a benefit concert for the NAACP at the Metropolitan Opera House. Reply

The second release, entitled HiFi Ellington Uptown (CL ) replaced "A Tone Parallel to Harlem" with "The Controversial Suite." The third version (CL ) traded "Perdido" for "The Liberian Suite." Finally, the current Ellington Uptown unites all of these versions on a single disc with digital remastering. Reply

"Tone Parallel to Harlem," also known as the "Harlem Suite," was not written for an occasion but seems to be a follow-on to Ellington's major opus "Black, Brown and Beige." Both pieces were written for the orchestras with which they were recorded here. Both are typical of Ellington's extended works, with varied textures and dramatic progression/5(30). Reply

Even back in the early '50s, Columbia Records took Duke Ellington seriously enough to place this album on its prestigious Masterworks label, heretofore reserved mostly for highbrow classical music and Broadway shows (later in the decade, though, it was retitled Hi-Fi Ellington Uptown and reissued on the pop series with an additional piece, "The Controversial Suite").9/ Reply
